Mary Boswell Completes First Singles Gold Slam; Wins Doubles Gold Slam with Louise Russ

Congratulations to Mary Boswell for completing a DOUBLE GOLD SLAM at the 75 Hard Courts. It was her first ever singles gold slam…she won 3 of the 4 nationals in the 70s on more than one occasion though. Louise Russ won her 2nd doubles gold slam in the 75s, partnering Mary at all four 75 national events. Mary fittingly beat Louise to win the singles title in a hard fought 62 75 final match. Jane Lutz took the bronze and Lutz/Joyce Jones took the doubles bronze. The doubles finalists were Canby/Winans.

Shelly Works, who enters the 45s next year, beat Shelly Stillman-Scott (who is already in that division) 62 75 to win the 35s gold. Carolyn Wei took the bronze with a three set win over Michelle King.

Debbie Croft and Pam Cooke won the all-NorCal 35s doubles final over Carolyn Wei/Carmel Mary Hill 63 62. Lori Fahrenholz/Pam Dodman won the bronze.

In the 45s, Mariana Hollman continued her stellar play, ousting last year’s champion, Susan Wright 75 61. Fran Chandler beat Myke Loomis in three sets to take the bronze. Chandler/Vick won the doubles over Cooke/Croft. Wright/Loomis took the bronze in 3 sets over Stillman-Scott/Tracy Thompson.

Martha Downing won the 55 singles title, beating second-seeded Ching Ling Chang 61 62, a reversal of the result of their last meeting, in March on clay. Downing said it was much closer than the score indicated and that she played aggressively throughout the match. Wilma Lee, who gave Downing a big scare in the semis, took the bronze with a straight set win over Carla Brown. Janet Watanabe finished 5th.

Leslie Vallejo and Mary Harris, reunited after Harris had some injuries and surgery, beat last year’s champions, Kathy Bennett/Kathy Barnes in a close three-setter to win the 55 doubles. Brown/Jan Kirkland-Cochran took the bronze over Downing/Chris Parker.

Suella Steel continued her fine year, winning her third singles national and 4th doubles gold ball (all with Charleen Hillebrand). She and Charleen completed a gold slam for the 2nd straight year and she scored a straight set win over Hillebrand. Cathie Anderson beat her doubles partner, Sinclair Bill, in straight sets to finish third. Norma Veal/Claudia Giacomini won the bronze over Lurline Fujii/Jane Pang in straight sets.

Lucy Dettmer won the 85 round robin to win the singles gold; Lucy and Dodo won the doubles gold too.
