Fishburne till 5/5 in the third at which point Fishburne won the final
games and the claycourt title. It was the 2nd day in a row that Wright
had to play to 65 in the third (though the match today was "only" about
3 hours long, it was extremely physical). However, the strain of so
much play was not evident during the rallies, which were intense, hard
hitting baseline affairs. Nichols took the bronze by default over
Vesna McKenna beat Renata Marcinkowska the 3 time
defending champion 63 63 to win the 40s title. She served and returned
beautifully and ouran the defending champion. Amy Alcini took the
bronze with a 62 63 win over Sue Kaleel.
In doubles, Joanne
Russell and Amy Alcini beat the second seeds, McKenna and Kaleel in a
dogfight, 75 in the third and McKenna complimented Russell’s movement
during the match. Alissa Finerman/Erika Smith beat Debbie Croft/Pam
Cooke 60 76 to advance to the final at 9am and then played Alcini/Russell around 5pm, winning 60 61, in a flawless exhibition of doubles.
