BallenIsles, Thursday

BallenIsles started yesterday…181 women in the 3080s. It’s a strong and large field.

I had a bye in singles/doubles yesterday but won today; tomorrow it gets tougher as it should.

Terri Thompson upset #4 seeded Sheila Chiricosta in the 50s…she used the wind to her advantage against the indoor (Ohio) player. Chiricosta gained a measure of revenge…she upset the 4th seed in the 40s in the first round, Andrea Wohlschlager. Jean Schalk upset the other 3-4 seed, Anne Schwartz and faces top seeded Jenny Klitch, who had to go 3 sets to win today.

Julie Farina beat 58 seeded Jane Zenker 61 61…a player to watch. Next up for her is Diane Fishburne.

The 60s was full of upsets today..Lee Delfausse caused the biggest upset, taking out #3-4 seed Pat Keleman 63 75 on clay. Toni Novack dropshotted (I didn’t see the match, but I KNOW Toni dropshotted) Janet Watanabe mercilessly. She plays Kerry Young next. Sue Bramlette faces Delfausse. Carol Clay had a tough match with Lynn Thompson before prevailing 63 75, and her doubles partner, Ellen Goodman, had an even tougher time, edging Carolann Castell 76 67 75…a very long match it was too. Brenda Carter dropped the second set to Mary Murray before winning the third 60.

In the 70s, Sue Kossowsky upset Sue Simon, and three of the seeds, including #2 seed Inge Weber, had to go 3 sets to win, but they all advanced.

Rosie Asch of Canada, who played only a limited schedule last year, beat #4 seed Suzanne Ryerson in straight sets and takes on Louise Russ tomorrow. Jane Lutz plays Rita Price in the other semi.

It was nice to see Jan Dennis here, and she looks great.

The dinner is tomorrow, I will try and take some photos then. The new clubhouse at BallenIsles is very impressive, and beautiful…and not quite finished…still some construction going on.
