NSWTA Championships a Rousing Success

From Brenda Carter:

Hi all,

I’ve just returned from the inaugural NSWTA Championships held at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, VA — in my opinion, it was a great success!!!  There were 67 entries and the fields were strong.  Thanks to Carol Wood and Joan Oelschlager for all of their hard work, in conjunction with Steve Fiske of Belle Haven.  They worked hard to "drum up" business in hopes the tournament will become a Category II in the near future.  I met many new people and they all loved the tournament there and planned to come back next year bringing more people!!!  The club is beautiful and it’s in a great location.

Thanks also to the Board members who brainstormed and worked on this idea of starting a new tournament that NSWTA could sort of call its own.  Several joined NSWTA and several others left with application forms, so it may result in more memberships.

Following are some of the final results, which demonstrate the quality of the entries.  I also add there were many quality matches throughout the tournament and a good time was had by all.

35s — Mary Beth Williams def Alina Ackenbom

45s — Mariana Hollman def Erin Boynton (Toronto)

55s — Elly Appel (Charlottesville/Netherlands) def Rita Giles

65s — Ruby Jenkins def Carol Wood

75s — Burnett Herrick def Mary Boswell
