BallenIsles Thursday

It was a hot and sunny day in South Florida, with temperatures in the low 80s! Even the Floridians weren’t used to the heat and humidity, but no one was complaining.

Sheila Chiricosta came out of the cold of Ohio with her game ready for the clay. Playing 2 divisions, she upset Susie Brown 64 75 in the 50s to reach the quarters (against world #1 Fran Chandler) and faces Anne Schwartz in the semis of the 40s tomorrow. Diane Burwen and Tracy Viebrock. The two started at 3pm and battled for nearly four hours before Viebrock prevailed 46 64 75. Viebrock ran into Susan Love today, who showed no love to Tracy and won 60 61.

I had a tough match today with Julie (Pressley) Farina, a long, lean counterpuncher who moves and anticipates well. I won 62 62 but it wasn’t easy and took over 2 hours. Tomorrow I play another tall player, Canadian Erin Boynton.

Tracy Viebrock and I won our first round yesterday under the lights (Tracy didn’t finish till nearly 7 yesterday) against Hartley/Hulsen, a tough New England team, then won today a bit more easily. We face Lynn Ellis/Susie Brown tomorrow.

In the 60s, Lynn THompson upset Janet Watanabe 62 62. She plays Ellen Goodman tomorrow. Ellen edged Susie Peiffer who is coming back from a knee replacement. Sandy Cooper plays Judy Louie, another intriguing match, and Carol Clay faces Lee Delfausse. Sue Bramlette takes on Barbara Hubbard.

There were some upsets in the 70s; Louise Stolitzky edged Ria Graham in 3 sets and Heidi Attlefellner beat Marialuisa Tinelli, also in three sets. They face each other in the quarters. The other seeds advanced handily.

The 80s is a RR with Jane Lutz and Nancy Stout being the top 2 seeds.

In the 40 doubles and 30 doubles, they are playing a RR, same in the 80s.

In the 50s, the sole three set match was that between Brown/Ellis and Cooper/Meiners (who is Margie Cooper’s sister). Brown/Ellis prevailed in three sets.

The seeds all advanced in the 60 and 70 doubles…quarters tomorrow.
