Wednesday in Mallorca, Sunny, Breezy, Semis Tomorrow

And then there were two…Americans in the singles that is.

Michael Beautyman took out the 4th seed in the men’s 65s in straight sets, 64 62, while Hugh Thomson lost a close one 63 76 to Lacina, the 3rd seed. Hugh rallied from 3-5 down in the 2nd, staving off a set point at 35 on his own serve, then watching while Lacina broke himself with 3 double faults! Hugh returned the gift with two of his own, was broken, and then broke back. Lacina controlled his nerves and hit some penetrating shots in the tiebreak to finish the match.

Pam Schultz lost her consolation singles to a very steady German, a semifinalist last year here. Sabine Robertz. She had a tough match in doubles against the 2nd seeds, losing 63 64 with a pick up partner.

George Sarantos retired in the third set of his singles match, to Lavau from France.

I didn’t play singles today, but played doubles against a German team, we won 61 61. They played pretty typical German doubles, mostly one up one back (certainly there was no serving and volleying going on from their side of the court), with the net player standing very close to the net, knowing her partner was not going to rush the net.

Tomorrow I play Sabine Schmitz, a tough German player with an all court game.
