Rainy Houston: The drought is over

The tournament website is down today. It is raining, and has been since about 12:30, and a decision about the rest of the day’s play will be made soon. Doubles has been cancelled.

There have been a lot of upsets this week, starting with the 75s, a chaotic division (everyone beats everyone) under the best of circumstances. Lyn Tietz, who won the clay court Cat II in Fort Lauderdale earlier in the year, beat Dori deVries yesterday, the world #1, in straight sets. Kathy Langer trailed 2010 world champion Burnett Herrick 52 in the third but rallied to win the final set 75. Carol Wood advanced to play Dorothy Matthiessen who was NOT an upset victim. Lyn then beat Kathy in 3 sets; Dorothy advanced more easily over Carol.

Brenda Carter rallied from 14 down to take the first set from Carol Clay and they are now locked at 2/2 in the 2nd. Heide Orth advanced over Leslie Pixley in straight sets.

I lost to Pat Purcell who played very well. She plays Susan Wright; Sherri Bronson had another slow start (she dropped the first set to Hiko Fritz Krakow in the previous round) and fine finish to beat Janet Mosely in 3 sets; she faces Diane Barker who beat Rita Giles in a match filled with long points and nice rallies.

Yesterday Renata Marcinkowska, the 5th seed, beat Kim Cashman, the 2nd seed in straight sets to advance to the semis of the 45s; she then lost 65 retired to Brenda Sturm; Anna Zimmerman upset #1 seed Shelly Works in straight sets.

The 35s were still playing, or most of them were, when it rained though top seeded Kelly Wilson finished before the rains came, winning 60 60
