Tournaments Everywhere This Week!

The women’s 50-90 Hard Courts (yes, Dodo is playing and her gold ball count is at….395…and she’s 95 and playing with the “kid” in the division, Betty Cookson) is going on in La Jolla at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in the San Diego area of SoCal; the men’s 80, 85, 90 Indoors is taking place up in Vancouver, Washington, just north of Portland, OR and the women’s 35/45/55 Indoors is taking place in Homewood, IL, about an hour south of Chicago.

Vancouver:

My dad is playing the Indoors in Vancouver in the 85s. He plays his doubles partner in the singles final tomorrow, Tony Franco, after edging Roald Flater in three sets in the semis…Tony advanced in straight sets. They play Flater and Louis Stevenson in the doubles final (it’s a RR but both teams have advanced without losing a match). In the 90s, Ed Tyler meets Bob Sherman in the final. Kuntz/Mathes look on task to win the 90 doubles, having beaten Swetka/Sherman.

The 80s had a much larger draw and are only out to the quarters. The top four seeds, including newcomers to the age division, Roger Hing and Saul Snyder, eased easily into the final 8. Neil Roberts caused the only upset, edging Richard Eitel, the 7th seed, in three sets. McCabe/John Powless and Hing/Snyder have reached the final 4 in doubles as well, as did Roberts.

La Jolla:

In the 50s, the only seed pressed was Kathy Vick, who edged the top Canadian, Erin Boynton, in three sets to advance. A bad back put her and Vicky Buholz out of the doubles later in the day. In the doubles, the top seeds, Kathy Fritz/Roz Nideffer also withdrew. In the 60s, Fay Matsumoto easily beat 5-8 seed Marilyn McCombs. There were two upsets in the 60s, Damian/Glasgow and Morgan/Hamburg advancing past 5-8 seeded teams. In the 70s, Judy Janc upset 5-8 seeded Patti Boyer in straight sets. Lurline Fujii had to work hard to edge Dori deVries, rallying after dropping the first set 60 to win in three. Dorothy Matthiessen was also pushed to three sets before beating Terri Eggers. In the 80s, Carol Cofer, new to the division, won comfortably against Joan Brisbin; Margaret Canby, the only seed in action also won comfortably.

Homewood:

The play starts tomorrow in Homewood, so there have been no upsets yet…tomorrow there are lots of good matches. The draws are small but potent. I play,  Lois Harris from Illinois tomorrow. Ironically, the weather has been gorgeous here, and due to a warm winter/spring, the trees are fully leafed out and it’s very green. The courts were resurfaced last summer and aren’t as fast as indoor courts are typically, though I’m no expert on indoor courts. The courts are US Open blue with a teal surround, quite colorful.
