The 33rd ITF World Individual Championships began yesterday in Turkey. I am playing in the 55 singles and 55 doubles divisions. My partner is Pat Purcell from St. Louis, who was a member of the Connolly Cup team which won the title last week. This is a tough addition to Pat in the singles, her teammates Diane Barker, Susan Wright and Tina Karwasky are all playing, plus some excellent players from other countries, Ros Balodis from Australia, Betty Michel from France, Susana Villaverde from Switzerland to name a few.

One interesting word in Turkish is “USTA” which means: “n. master, expert, old hand, workman, craftsman, adept, artist, connoisseur, constructor, dab, dabster, hand, journeyman, proficient, shark, whizz”, so you see it everywhere…there’s a chain of baklava stores called “Ali USTA”!
