USA Queens Cup Defeats #2 Seeded Germany; USA in the Title Hunt in Nine Cups

The USA Queens’ Cup team had a tough but ultimately successful day against a determined German team today. Lyn Tietz started things off with a win over Brigitte Jung. Roz King followed against  Elisabeth Van Boemmel, world #1, whom King had defeated in June at the European Open Super Seniors. This time Van Boemmel was ready for King’s slices and dices and edged her 64 76 (holding off a set point at 5-6 in the process). The match would come down to the doubles and USA’s Tietz and Dorothy Matthiessen won the doubles 64 61 to advance the team to the final round robin match against Great Britain on Saturday.

The USA Hart Cup team suffered another 2/1 loss, this time dropping the two singles before winning the doubles over the top two Aussies, Margaret Robinson and Peggy Hoystead in a match tiebreak 10-8. Margaret Canby played the doubles with Mary Ann Plante and Canby said she finished the match with an overhead winner!

The USA Bitsy Grant Cup team won today against Australia 3/0 and play Germany in the final on Saturday. The USA Kitty Godfree Cup also won 3/0 and play France in the final Saturday.

The USA Althea Gibson Cup team won 3/0 over Spain.
