Chamisal Saturday: Unseeded Amanda Parson Siegel Wins 35 Singles; Top Seeded Diane Barker Cruises to 55 Singles Crown

Unseeded Amanda Parson Siegel dropped only a handful of games in winning her first national 35s crown. Siegel, from Henderson, NV, near Las Vegas  has a beautiful one handed backhand and great all court game. She was more consistent than her doubles partner, second-seeded Yulia Bolotova, but the final was competitive and featured some great rallies. Siegel won 62 63. The two combined to win the round robin 35s doubles draw; Kristen Hillebrand/Anne Kerwin-Payne were second and Aleesa Yee/Erika Smith were third.

Diane Barker made her first national hard court appearance since 2008 and was fabulous, never dropping more than 4 games a match all week. I was lucky to get a couple of games in the final. If the final was a fizzle, the 3/4 playoff between Susan Wright and Tina Karwasky was a sizzle..Tina edged Susan 36 62 75 in a match that lasted about three hours.

There were still a lot of consolation matches to be played when I left, including the semis and final of the 55 singles. My sister Eileen Christin lost to Erin Boynton 62 75 and played very well…10 matches in six days will tend to improve one’s game. Anne Lowry plays Jane Pascoe in the consolation semis tomorrow with the winner to take on Bonnie Tetrick later in the day. Pascoe beat Leslie Murveit in three sets to reach the semis.

In the afternoon Manola Colter and I drove to Big Sur. Even though it was foggy/overcast, it was a very pretty drive.
