The USA is into the medal rounds in the Men’s and Women’s 65, 7 & 80 divisions after round robin play concluded Wednesday in Umag.
65s: The Kitty Godfree Cup team beat Canada 3/0 and has yet to lose a set in the competition. They play the semifinals against Australia tomorrow on Center Court (for those early risers, this will probably be streamed live; if they are it will be here: http://live-stream.htsv.hr). The Britannia Cup beat Great Britain 2/1. Len Wofford was the MVP of the tie, winning at #2 singles and combining with captain Padg Bolton to take the deciding doubles point. Dave Sivertson lost a tough 3 setter at #1 singles. (#2 singles is played first, followed by #1 singles, then doubles). USA plays Sweden in the quarters of the knockout draw on Thursday.
70s: The Jack Crawford Cup team lost 2/1 to Switzerland today. They lost both singles matches but won the dead rubber doubles match. They now play off for 7-12th place and await the winner of the Australia/Canada match, which will be played Thursday. So the USA won’t play till Friday. The Althea Gibson Cup plays off in the 5th-8th playoff group starting tomorrow. They have to play the top seeds, France, which were upset first round by So Africa, so have a tough playoff draw!
75s: Both the Bitsy Grant Cup and Queens Cup team advanced today with 3/0 wins. The women beat a tough German team and now have a day off before playing Great Britain in the semis on Friday. The men beat Slovenia and now are in the 1-6th place group. They play #5 seeded Great Britain Thursday and last year’s champions Germany if they pass that test.
80s: The Doris Hart Cup team beat Great Britain 3/0 but Burnett Herrick had to win a match tiebreak to win her match. Carol Wood won at #2 singles and Judy Smith/Herrick took the doubles point. They play France next; I believe on Friday. The Gardnar Mulloy Cup team swept past Sweden with the loss of only two games in three matches today. They play Friday against the defending champions Germany.
