Burnett Herrick Takes 80 Singles Crown; Most Singles Semis Set in Huntsville Monday

Herrick

Burnett Herrick, playing her first Category 1 80s tournament (she doesn’t turn 80 till late December) beat Dorothy Matthiessen 64 62. It was a rain delayed match; all singles were scheduled for 9am and at 9, right on cue, it started raining pretty hard. However, the grounds crew and tournament staff worked hard to get the courts playable and they were ready by about 12:30. Play began just before 1pm. Playing on center court, Burnett continued her fine spell of play in beating Matthiessen. The 3/4 playoff between Mary John Lynch and Esther Williams appears to have been in progress when the rain resumed around 2:30 and play was cancelled for the day just before 4pm. The courts as they appeared at 9:30 this morning and a photo of players waiting out the rain delay.

In the 70s, three of the four quarterfinal matches were completed. Betty Wachob, the top seed had a tough match with Judy Louie, winning 75 63. Lee Delfausse beat Peggy Andry 61 75 and Cathie Anderson beat Anne Russ in an all-San Diego County match 62 63. Sheila Weinstock, the #3 seed is down 75 52 to Susan Kimball in the only uncompleted match. Tomorrow Anderson plays Delfausse and Wachob plays the winner of Kimball/Weinstock. In the 60s, Tina Karwasky rallied from 2-4 and 4-5 down against Kathy Foulk to win 75 61. Sherri Bronson dropped the first set to Rita Giles, who made some amazing retrievals, but controlled the points and executed her volleys and overheads well to win the final sets 62 63. Wendy McColskey blasted her forehand past Leslie Murveit, winning 61 64. I beat Chieko Holt who is still in the process of switching to a 2-handed backhand 60 60.  Tomorrow I play McColskey and Bronson faces Karwasky.

All matches start at 9am; doubles to follow at 1pm; all doubles matches today were cancelled due to rain. However, the forecast does look a bit better for the next two days now:
