Checket Cup Friday night

The forecast was good for today, but no one told Mother Nature. It rained off and on all day.

The singles mostly finished. Jovette Levine scored the biggest upset of the day, taking out the #2 seed, Lee Delfausse, in a match that finished about 7pm (it was started about 2pm) 60 75. This was in the 65s. She faces the winner of Peggy Gluck/Olga Stark. Betty Wachob/Judy Louie play each other in the top half of the draw…the one that still has seeded players. Judy took out Frances Dickenson, the player who beat Grace Woo.

In the 55s, in the top half of the draw, aka the "Lauderdale Tennis Club Championships, 55 division), Kathy Keating Kay, last year’s finalist, edged Carol Clay 76 63; she plays me next. Kerry Young places a Canadian player, Moulin, who upset #4 seed, Peggy Machoian in the quarters 3,2.

Susan Love took the first set 76 against a fretting Vesna McKenna (gut strings + rain = problems) but McKenna, the top seed, got a racquet restrung and improved her consistency, hit many winners from serve to dropshot to volley and beat Love 61 61 the final 2 sets. She plays defending champion Fran Chandler, who moved smoothly past Jenny Klitch, the 40s winner at BallenIsles, 62 61.

Mary Boswell edged Boots Van Nostrand in two tight sets to win the 75 singles. The level of play in this final was impressive. Both Mary and Boots move very well, and executed dropshots and drives expertly. It was a fun match to watch.

Elaine Mason faces her doubles partner, Cathie Hall in the 85s. Elaine beat #2 seeded Connie Ebert to reach the final.

It rained again about 7:30 and play was cancelled for the evening with many matches still scheduled to be played. Somehow they will get played tomorrow, and the weather should be fair the next two days, windy and cooler.
