Dorothy Matthiessen Wins Two Gold Slams in the 75s!

Dorothy Matthiessen beat her doubles partner, Burnett Herrick 62 16 62 to claim the 2010 Women’s 75 Hard Court National title and then combined with Burnett to beat Angie Ray and Joyce Jones. Burnett and Dorothy also won the grass and indoors; Dorothy won the clay with Boots Van Nostrand. Both are members of the USA Queens Cup team and will be competing in Antalya, Turkey in October against eight other international teams.

Joining Burnett and Matthiessen in Turkey will be Charleen Hillebrand, who will play on the 65s (Godfree) Cup team. She won the 65 Hard Court title over Cathie Anderson 76 63. Charleen was the more aggressive player and fought off a determined bid by Anderson to upset the top seed. Suella Steel beat Lurline Fujii to place third.

In the 45s, Fran Chandler beat a game Rhona Kaczmarczyk 63 62 to win the 45 hard courts. Rhona was understandably weary from her 4 hr 27 min battle with Mariana Hollman the day before, but didn’t offer up any excuses. Fran played steady baseline tennis and showed off a few volleys too, but her beautiful movement is the hallmark of her game, she floats around the court. Hollman edged Shelly Works 64 76 to place third.

In the 35s, the long match of the day was Amy Alcini, who had a long three setter for the 2nd straight day, and Mary Beth Williams, a power baseliner. Mary Beth and Amy exchanged bullets off their backhands from the baseline and Williams mixed in some timely slice forehands on crucial points. Williams won 64 in the third. She will play Patricia Zerdan who blunted the power of Leslie Rose sufficiently to win 63 64.

In the 55s, I beat Joanne Russell 63 63. Tina Karwasky beat her doubles partner, Mary Ginnard, 63 62 to take the bronze.

In 65 doubles, top seeded HIllebrand/Steel are into the final and I didn’t hear who won the other semi, Pang/Russ or Barnhill/Ploor. Barnhill/Ploor upset the 65 indoor winners, Bucklin/Polisky 76 in the third yesterday.

In 45 doubles, the final is between Erika Smith/Mary Dailey and Mariana Hollman/Shelly Works. Both teams advanced to the final without much trouble.

In 55 doubles, Ginnard/Karwasky beat Nichols/Jan Kirkland-Cochran 61 64 and Sherri Bronson/Leslie Airola Murveit beat Bonnie Tetrick/Barb Sasser 64 61.

I drive back tomorrow after playing the 3/4 playoff in doubles, so it will be a few days before I have time to post more photos…
