Fred Farzanegan scored his first win of the year over King Van Nostrand in the men’s 70 clay court final. He lost to Van Nostrand in two Category II finals eary in the year. He won the indoors and hard courts earlier this year but didn’t enter the grass this week. Farzanegan beat Van Nostrand 26 62 60. Van Nostrand had a tough semi against Bob Duesler, the defending champion, beating him 64 46 61 while Farzanegan beat Mark Forrester 63 62.
Duesler/Jim Nelson won their third doubles title of the year at Pinehurst and are going for a doubles Gold Slam this week on the grass. They beat Baughman/Landin in the final.
Newton Meade won his second 85s national title of the year, beating top seeded Bob Sherman 61 60 and Neville Halligan of Australia in three sets in the final Halligan beat Marvin Brown, the 2nd seed, in the semis. Halligan/Meade won the doubles over Henderson/Sherman in three sets.
Alex Swetka completed Gold Slams in singles and doubles, beating William Kuntz in the singles final and combining with Ed Osgood to beat Kuntz/Ritzenberg in the doubles final.
