Hello From La Jolla

The story from the first days of La Jolla was the number of players who ended up in the emergency room.

Doris Hakman ended up in the emergency room with dangerously high blood pressure; Karen Shepard fell and broke her wrist (had surgery last night and is at the tournament watching today, the surgery was successful but not simple) and Penny Thomas was in the hospital after playing 2 long 3-setters yesterday.

But enough of the doom and gloom (though the weather is "May Gray" this week. There’s been lots of good tennis.

The biggest upset in the 50s happened today when the first time pairing of Frances O’Sullivan/Marianne Robertson beat the top seeds, Mary Ginnard/Tina Karwasky in straight sets to reach the quarters. Frances beat Kandy Chain yesterday in a minor upset, as Kandy was a 9-16 seed. The top 8 seeds though have reached the quarters here in the 50s.

In the 60s, in a minor upset Betty Wachob upset 4th seeded Anne Russ to reach the semis. Cathie Anderson takes on Terri Eggers in one semi, Eggers reached the semis when Penny Thomas had to pull out due to illness.

The tournament really "heats" up tomorrow…the play, not the weather which is still cool, 60s. Off to the barbecue on the beach, more soon.

Carolyn
