There were 4 finals today: 35/55/65 doubles and 55 singles.
The 35 doubles: Kristin Hess/Jennifer Toney, unseeded, ousted the top seeds, Mary Dailey/Trish Riddell 76 63 in a display of "Big Babe" tennis. Lots of hard hitting, especially by Hess.
Carolina Blouin/Tammy Morris, the 2nd seeds, won the bronze.
In the 55s, Leslie Murveit won her first ever gold ball and was on cloud nine (probably didn’t need a plane to get back to California after the match…). She was really (and justifiably) excited and was on the phone for a while after the match. She teamed with Sherri Bronson, who, though somewhat hampered by a sore hamstring, nonetheless lobbed beautifully. They beat Tracy Viebrock and me 75 62.
Lil Peltz-Petow/Betsy Savitt were up 64 32 in the 3/4 playoff against Tina Karwasky/Sue Sprague when they had to retire to catch a plane back to Florida.
In the 65s, the top seeds, Heide Orth/Betty Wachob beat the 2nd seeds, Ann Russ/Jane Pang 75 62. The #3 seeds, Judy Louie/Lee Delfausse beat the #4 seeds, Charleen Hillebrand/Sheila Weinstock to place third.
I won the 55 singles over Tina Karwasky 62 60…zoned out at the right time. Martha Downing displayed her improved clay court game in the 3/4 playoff, moving Sherri Bronson all over the court in her 75 62 win.
Sue, Cathy, Harriett, Mary Ann and the rest of the NSWCC crew and sponsors once again put on a fabulous tournament. We can’t thank them all enough for all the hard work they put into hosting this fabulous event. It was the 40th edition…here’s hoping we’ll be back for the 50th in 10 years.
