There was a ton of good tennis today too. In the 45s, Susan Love upset #4 seed Myke Loomis, attacking constantly. Myke fought hard too and hit some great groundies and serves…it was a high quality match all around. Susan advanced 75 64. It was a replay of the final 4 years ago, which Myke won in three sets.
Jenny Klitch had a little more variety than Shelly Works, edging her in the three sets. Jenny hit some nice dropshots and came to net some; Shelly hit some great backhands and scrambled well.
Fran Chandler moved past the always tough Gerda Preissing and Vesna McKenna moved past Anna Zimmerman in straight sets.
In the 55s, seven of the top 8 seeds reached the semis, with the only exception being Joan Oschlager who lost to Donna Drosner yesterday. Donna won a marathon match over Bonnie Tetrick 64 in the third, 3 hours…Bonnie was trying to reach her first ever national quarterfinal and fell just short. Donna takes on Martha Downing tomorrow. Martha beat Tracy Viebrock 61 64. Tina Karwasky, Sherri Bronson, Carolyn Nichols, Chieko Holt (d Rita Giles 60 76), Leslie Murveit and Sue Bramlette are all into the quarters.
In doubles the only upset was Bezmalinovich/Bohac beating Babb/Carter in three sets…long match, lots of baseline rallies between Bez and Carter…lots of volleys by Babb and Bohac. We play them next. I play Holt in singles.
In the 65s, Cathie Anderson lost a tough 3 setter to Lee Delfausse; Heide Orth beat Judy Louie; Betty Wachob showed no mercy against Lurline Fujii and Charleen Hillebrand beat Sheila Weinstock in three sets.
In the 75s, the top 4 seeds advanced without trouble…for them trouble starts tomorrow, Burnette Herrick faces Dorothy Matthiessen and Mary Boswell plays Boots Van Nostrand in a repeat of last year’s final.
In the 85s, Dorothy Knode edged #2 seed Marion Tyrell 75 63.
That’s the report for today…gala dinner tonight, 9am match tomorrow…it’s heating up in Houston on and off the court.
