except for Erika Smith, who was battling at #1 doubles with Mai
Ichikawa in the 35s when we left. NorCal lost to Southern today in the
35s, Southern won all 3 singles. We had the day off, NorCal 45s. More
later…
Ok, it’s later. Erika and
Mai, NorCal lost to the Southern 35s team of Rachel Gale and Paula
Juels-Jones 76 76. The NorCal players served twice for the first set
and had a one break 5-2 lead in the second, but Gale and Jones were
extremely tough in tight situations.
In the 45s, SoCal, seeded 4, took on Florida, who would have been the
next seed. It was a tough match. Joanne Russell mixed up her shots and
aggressively…drop shotted Tracy Thompson to win at #1 singles 62 64,
hitting dropshot/lob combos to win the final 3 points of the match.
Robin Harris took on Sue Rasmussen, in a battle of "lack of singles
practice" players. Robin won in three sets…. Sue took the first set.
Mary Dailey, the singles player, won her singles match for the 2nd
straight day, beating Colleen Ferrell 62 64. Florida looked poised to
clinch the match when Russell/Dailey went up 41 against
Thompson/Harris, but the SoCal players rallied to win the match in
three tight sets and clinch the SoCal win, since Cherise Mejoili and
Ferrell beat Rasmussen/Terri Thompson to level the match earlier on.
SoCal takes on Southern tomorrow and NorCal faces Texas. The weather is
going to be dreadful, extremely windy.
