Intersectionals, Sunday

NorCal 45s finished third, beating arch-rival Southern California 4-1. I beat Tracey Thompson 62 64; Shelly Scott beat Robin Harris 62 75 and Judy Newman Rakela played the marathon match of the day, edging Cherise Meoli 26 62 63 in over three hours…lots of extremely long rallies and grueling points in that match, and the sun was wicked on one side of the court, so it was hard to come to net on that end for much of the match. Judy hit a net cord dribbler to forge a 53 lead in the third set…then went up 40-15, only to watch Cherise hit a net cord winner to save the first match point. However, 10 minutes later, Judy sealed the win for herself and the team. SoCal’s Thompson/Harris won at #1 doubles and SoCal didn’t play the #2 doubles.

NorCal 35s finished fifth, blitzing Florida 5-0. Carolyn Wei beat Marta Garzon 62 63; Mai Ichikawa only lost a game against Steline Disbergen and Catherine Vowles outlasted Suzanne Siegler, displaying newfound patience and a big serve in the win. Ichikawa/Wei beat Tracy Viebrock/Disbergen and Scott/Chris Ramsower-Pearlstein beat Teri Mejides/Siegler.

In the action you really wanted to know about, Texas 45s were playing Southern 45s when we left, the doubles was about 15 minutes away from starting. Southern won at #2 (Mariana Hollman beat Kathy Vick)and #1 singles (Fran Chandler beat Shelly Works), but Vicky Buholz outlasted Sue Bartlett at #3 singles (Sue cramped in the third and had to retire). So I don’t know who won the tie.

The SoCal 35s were also up 2-1 after the singles over Southern. SoCal won at #1 and #2 singles, but Taylor Taylor, playing at #3, rallied from a set and 51 down against Cammy MacGregor to win the match.
