La Jolla Day3

La Jolla Day 3, Wednesday: Another "May Gray" day, but another nice day for tennis.

In the 50s, Donna Drosner, one of the 5-8 seeds, lost on Tuesday to the steady and tenacious Judy Belinsky…who lost today to Mary Morgan a 9-16 seed. So Mary now takes on Susan Wright, the top seed in the quarters. Jackie Snell  (a 9-16 seed) took out Kandy Chain (a 5-8 seed) in 3 sets. They had just played in the final of the SoCal sectionals last weekend, where Chain won.

Frances O’Sullivan narrowly avoided an upset, edging Priscilla Sisson 76 in the third. Frances rolled through the 1st set 61, then Sisson rallied to take the 2nd set 76. Frances was tough in the 3rd set tiebreaker, winning it 7 points to 4.

The top 8 seeds all reached the quarters in the 60 singles, with the closest match being Carol Clay’s 63 62 win over Janet Watanabe.

In the 70s, Lyn Tietz beat Anneke Balics, a 5-8 seed, 62 60 to reach the quarters against Dori DeVries.

Doubles in the 50s are going on now, the round of 16, the 60s and 70s have the day off from doubles.
