Nichols Wins 80 Clay Court Singles/Doubles

Graydon Nichols successfully defended his men’s 80 singles/doubles titles today, but not without a big battle.

He beat Jason Morton in the semis and Clem Hopp, who has had a terrific year to date, winning every other clay court match he’s played in singles, including the European Championships. There was little between the two, the final score was 60 36 76(5). Hopp won their previous meeting this year, the hard court final. Hopp beat last year’s finalist, Tony Franco, 61 75 in the semis. Franco won the bronze by default.

Franco/Nichols, the 2006 world doubles champions, edged Hopp/Morton 26 64 64, rallying from 04 down in the third to win their third straight clay court doubles title in the 80s (and Nichols 11th straight 80s national title).

In the 75s, John Powless/Dick Doss beat George McCabe/Jack Vredevelt 64 21 ret. inj. McCabe is scheduled to play Saul Snyder in the singles final tomorrow. (I don’t know yet who was injured or what the injury was).
