Super Seniors Individual World Championships, Boynton Beach, FL Day 3

Monday May 2, 2022

Draws are here

I played the round of 16 in singles and doubles today and came out on top in both.

The day started a bit chaotically. We went to warm up at 9:30 in Palm Beach Gardens. Just as we were exiting the car raindrops began to fall. (Susan’s comment didn’t age well…”it’s not going to rain”). Well, it poured! The courts were quickly flooded. However, 5 minutes away it was dry and (thanks to Susan for calling the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center) we got a court to warm up.

I played Sylvia Geraud from France. She played on the French Kitty Godfrey Cup team and beat the #1 Dutch player yesterday. I won 60 61. We played once before in Bordeaux and she played better (she said I did as well…). Susan Wright beat a Brazilian player 60 60 and Diane Barker won 60 61 (and her Austrian opponent Sylvia Reigel was thrilled to have won a game and said she hit good shots to win it, Diane did not give it to her with errors!) Bunnie Jackson had a really tough match against the top French player, Benedict LeGrand, the 5th seed. They played for hours, and Benedict had a match point in the second set but Bunnie rallied to win it in a tiebreak. Some of the courts at the Quail Ridge CC have above ground watering and were getting dangerously dry and slippery in the late afternoon. They switched to an underground watered court after 2 sets and Benedict won the third 63…and plays Pat Medrado next. Our friend Jenny Cerff from So Africa had a tough match against #6 seed Sabine Schmidt, another match which lasted for hours. Sabine lost the first set after having set points, won the second comfortably and hung on to take the third 64. She faces Diane next. I play Gundi Weiland from Germany, a tough lefty.

Carolyn & Sylvie from France

In doubles Carolyn Lane and I played our first match ever as a team and played well, beating a tough team, Jenny Cerff and Abbi Neuthaler. The first point sent everyone scrambling all over the court, a classic clay court point, of which there were many. We won 62 62. We play an Aussie duo, Judith Buzza/Sarah Goddard tomorrow.
