I went over today to the men’s 75/80/85 Hard Courts at Morgan Run in Rancho Santa Fe, about 30 minutes northeast of La Jolla to watch my dad, Graydon play. He’s in the final of the 80 singles and doubles (with Roald Flater of Colorado). He plays Flater, who just won the 80 indoors last week, in the final tomorrowa and Nichols/Flater play Paul Roberts/Lee Smith, the 2nd seeds in the final of the doubles.
In the 75s Chuck deVoe takes on Scott Denison…Denison took out Russell Seymour, who had to retire with sciatica after Denison won the 2nd set.
Joe Russell and Marvin Brown are in the other semi.
The women’s event in La Jolla had only one major upset, Roz King took out the 2nd seed, Burnette Herrick, in 3 sets in the quarters of the 70s. She plays Dori DeVries next, who had to go 3 sets to beat Lyn Tietz. Kathy Langer advanced by default over Carol Wood, who had an unfortunate run in between her toe and her bed and the bed won…and Dorothy Matthiessen had no problems with traffic today, or her opponent, and also advanced to the semis.
