USA Wins Eight of Ten Round Robins

The USA teams won their round robin groups in eight of the ten cups contested here.

The Men’s 35s, the Italia Cup team, seeded 7th, fell to France, seeded 2nd, 3/0. They now playoff for sixth place. They play #4 seeded Argentina on Friday.

The Women’s 45s, the Margaret Court Cup team, seeded 1st, were upset by unseeded Ireland, 2/1. They play tomorrow against #4 seeded Great Britain on Court 6 at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Ireland had a very strong #1 player, Leslie O’Halloran, who beat Shelly Works 62 62. Shelly had a tough time reading the powerful lefty’s serve. Mariana Hollman won at #2 singles against Phillipa Palmer (from Houston!)  and Mariana and Judy Newman fell in the doubles, losing 61 76 (5).

The Women’s 35s, Lenglen Cup, beat Turkey 3/0, not even giving the Turks a game in three matches, and play France, the top seeds, on center court at La Costa on Thursday.

The Men’s 40s beat Canada 3/0 today. They play Spain on Friday at Barnes Tennis Center.

The women’s 40s beat Mexico 3/0 and go now into a round robin group with France and Spain. They play the loser of that match on Friday at Barnes Tennis Center.

The men’s 45s beat Australia 3/0 and play Spain tomorrow on Court 4 at Morgan Run, in the quarterfinals.

The women’s 50s beat Estonia 3/0, dropping only 2 games and now play the winner of Italy and Great Britain on Friday at San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

The men’s 50s beat New Zealand,  and have a bye tomorrow. On Friday they play the winner of Italy and Sweden at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

The women’s 55 beat Canada 3/0 and play So Africa, an upset winner over Australia, tomorrow on Court 7 at Balboa Tennis Club.    

The men’s 55 beat So Africa today 3/0 and play the winner of Spain and Great Britain on Friday at Balboa Tennis Club.
