USA Wins Young and Bueno Cups; USA Connolly into Final; Austria Cup is Third; Trabert Cup Finishes Second

In Ashburton the USA teams all won today: The Bueno Cup beat Australia 2/1. Susan Wright held off two set points against Australia in the 2nd set (she hit aces on both…one wide and one to the T); Roz Balodis beat Diane Fishburne and Susan and Joanne Russell played brilliantly to beat Kerrie Douglas and Ros in straight sets to clinch the Cup!

The Austria Cup finished one spot better than last year, beating Mexico 2/1 behind the singles win of Sal Castillo at #2 and the doubles play of Ross Persons and Sal. Fred Robinson fell in a well played match at #1 singles. Australia won the Cup.

Our team beat Australia 3/0. Tina quickly won at #2 singles 61 61; I battled Lyn Mortimer for a long time and managed to win 75 76 (7). I also held off 2 set points and NOT with aces.  Almost the reverse…she was attacking my first serve and missed…and then I hit a good passing shot. Tina and Mary played the doubles an crushed a good Aussie team 61 60.

In Timaru, the women’s 40s won 2/1 to win the Young Cup. Julie Cass won at # 1 singles; Amy Alcini lost at #2 singles and they won the doubles.

The women’s 35s lost again to Gr Britain so finished 4th; the men’s 40s fell in the final of the Trabert Cup.

Photos soon…have to pack to leave tomorrow and also prepare for tomorrow.
