Anne (Nancy) Hambleton Passes at Age 86: Long Time USTA and NSWTA Member

From Peggy Sange, a good friend of Nancy’s:

Carolyn,

I think you might want to include information about the recent passing of Nancy (Ann) Hambleton of Annapolis, MD, at age 86.  She was a ranked singles and doubles player with NSWTA.  See below for an email I sent out to her many tennis friends and her obituary is attached at the end.

Thanks so much.  –Peggy Sange

Dear Friends,

I have some sad news to pass along to you. Nancy Hambleton died on Monday or renal failure. As you know she had not been well for several years and had recently moved to Ginger Cove. But this latest health issue was quite a surprise and she went very quickly. Surgery was not an option as she had lost a lot of weight and was not strong enough to survive surgery.

Lots of credit to her daughter, Jane, who allowed her to die with dignity and in peace.

We all remember Nancy as a wonderful woman and a great tennis player. Tennis was her passion in life and she was devastated when her back issues prevented her from continuing to play. She was our role model for so many years – one of our oldest friends who was still playing tennis.

Nancy was active in AACTA playing on the singles ladder and doubles with Susan Darnley and in USTA league tennis, serving as a captain of our first 70 & Over Super Duper Seniors from 2006 to 2010.

Nancy continued to play singles and doubles with the National Senior Women’s Tennis Association and was on a select team [the Friendship Cup]  sent to Europe to represent the US. The only thing that stopped her was back surgery when she was 80. She even continued to be a ranked player after open-heart surgery.

We will all miss her.

You may send condolences to

And if you choose to send memorial contributions, Jane is sure that Nancy would want contributions to support the Tennis Alliance of Anne Arundel County in their efforts to build a community tennis center in Anne Arundel County. There will be a special plaque commemorating Nancy’s contribution to tennis in our county.
