The tennis heated up too. Rosie Asch won her inaugural 80s tournament, beating Jane Lutz 63 64. Louise Russ took out world champion Rita Price 62 62 in the 3/4 playoff. Russ and Lutz won the doubles over Price/Diane Hoffman. Price said she was looking forward to 2011 when she would enter the 85s!
In the 70s, Ria Graham beat Inge Weber 63 61 in a reversal of their 2009 score. This year it was Weber who had the long tough matches leading up to their match and Ria’s long arms and legs ran down the Canadian’s balls. She takes on "freshman" 70+ player Susanne Clark, who beat her doubles partner, also new to the 70s, Grace Woo, 64 64 in the other semi. Clark/Woo play Van Nostrand/Wasser in the final of the 70 doubles.
In the 60s, Kerry Young kept on rolling, beating Sue Bramlette 62 60 in a match that was closer than the score would indicate…lots of long rallies. The big upset of the day though was that of Carol (no one beats me 14 times in a row) Clay, who beat Brenda Carter for the first time, 16 64 64. Brenda was gracious in defeat and Carol was elated. It erased the memory quickly of the day before when a small dog (westie) bit her in the face (she’s ok).
Judy Louie and Lee Delfausse continued their string of upsets in the 60s, beating the third seeds, Bunny Smith/Young 63 63 to reach the final against Carter/Cindy Babb.
Diane Fishburne loses games, (occasionally), not matches, and beat Teri Thompson 61 60 to reach the final in the 50s. She faces Carolyn Nichols who weathered a storm of excellent play by Susie Brown in beating her 63 36 60…Susie hit a lot of lines today and not by accident. Nichols/Tracy Viebrock beat Thompson/Kathy Foulk 63 62 to reach the final against 2nd seeds, Lil Peltz-Petow/Betsy Savitt. The latter team edged Abbi Neuthaler/Jane Zenker 75 75.
Erika Smith/Mary Dailey rallied from a set down to win the 40 doubles over Farina/Weinreb 16 63 61. Jenny Klitch, top seeded in singles, likewise rallied from a set down and wore out Jami Patterson 67 62 6 to win the 40 singles.
In the 30s, the big matches are tomorrow…Trish Riddell vs Angela Simon in a repeat of last year’s final (won by Simon) and Patterson/Simon vs Dailey/Riddell.
