BallenIsles Thursday

It was a sunny, breezy start for the tournament today. I played Eileen Reynolds from Naples, FL and won 60 62. Eileen ran very well but I was a little more consistent.

In the 50s, Sheila Chiricosta edged Gail Warden, one of the 5-8 seeds, in three sets. Helga Immerfall beat Mary Voeks, a 5-8 seed in the 60s yesterday in 3 sets and advanced again today. Becky Timmis beat 5-8 seed Joan Oelschlager today.

All eight seeds advanced in the 70s though Dorcus Miller was forced to a third set tiebreak by Lili Dontigny and Grace Woo had a tough 64 75 win over Jovette Levine.

In the small but tough 80s division, Rosie Asch edged Lucille Kyvallos 57 64 64 in Lucille’s first competitive match since falling, breaking her right elbow and having surgery in October. Jane Lutz sailed past Irene Bretzel in the other RR match.

In 50 doubles, Tanya Gusttafsn/Betsy Savitt edged Susie Brown/Tracy Viebrock, seeded 3, 76 in the third. Daniela Esswein/Birgitte Hostrup upset 4th seeded Sheila Chiricosta/Suzanne Siegler in straight sets and Sally Kellogg/Gail Warden survived against Steffani Lomax/Marika Lindholm in three tough sets.

All seeds advanced in the 60 and 70 doubles.

Tomorrow I play Jill Sickle from Chicago, a 5-8 seed who is a good player. The forecast is for dry, cool (for South Florida, cold) weather.
