It was a beautiful sunny warm day today in Huntsville, but it rained hard during the night, so the clay courts were wet and soft, as they really don’t drain very well. So the consolation was played on hard court with a shortened format, 2 sets and a match tiebreak for singles and an 8 game pro set for doubles. Everything started around 1pm and finished quickly, with the last matches starting around 5 pm.

Main draw matches were put on hold, so the doubles only players haven’t played since Sunday!

In the 60s consolation the four seeds (5-8) all advanced in straight sets, though Rita Giles had to recover from a 5-2 deficit and also from 45 15-40 in the second set before closing out the match 62 75 against Deborah Hubbart.

In the 70s, Elizabeth Barnhill beat #3 Sheila Weinstock; Ruby Jenkins advanced over Judy Louie (5) because Judy can’t play singles on clay (2 artificial knees and one artificial hip!); Anne Loose beat Anne Russ (#5) 36 2-2 ret. Inj.

The doubles match of the day was Burgess/Drosner and Peltz-Petow/Taylor, won by the latter team 9-8 (3).

The 80s doubles is a round robin, but Judith Smith/Burnett Herrick won all four of their matches to take the gold. The results aren’t posted for the rest of the 80s doubles, but going into the last match, Austin/Lynch appeared to be on their way to a silver ball.
