Christchurch, Day One

USA teams did really well today. The men’s and women’s 65s and the men’s 60s and 70s did not play today, having received byes. The women’s and men’s 75s, and the women’s 60s and men’s 80s all won both singles matdches.
 
For the Queens’ Cup, Louise Russ played #2 against New Zealand, last year’s finalist; she won easily and Mary Boswell at #1 won 76 61.
 
In the 60s, Brenda Carter had a scare in her first round match, playing #1 singles. going down 1-4 in the first set and 1-5 in the tiebreaker before rallying to win 76 62. Betty Wachob won at #2 singles without a problem.
 
The USA Althea Gibson Cup team whitewashed their Japanese opponents, with both Dori DeVries and Dorothy Matthiessen playing very well to clinch the tie; Burnett Herrick/Roz King completed the sweep.
 
The Gardnar Mulloy Cup team won their singles matches comfortably with Tony Franco, the 2006 World Champion, playing #2 singles and Graydon Nichols, the 2005 ITF World Champion, playing #1 singles. Bill Tully and Roald Flater won the doubles in 3 sets.
 
Tom Springer and George McCabe won the singles for the Bitsy Grant Cup.
