The teams have arrived in San Diego, the USA teams have anyway. My Cup, the Connolly Cup has four players: Diane Barker, Daniels Island, SC; Susan Wright, Grand Junction, CO, Carolyn Nichols, the local, Rancho Santa Fe, CA and Leslie Airola Murveit, Portola Valley, CA. Diane, Jack Barker (Diane’s husband) Susan and I arrived at the courts around 7:30 to find them nearly empty. We practiced amongst the shadows of Balboa Park, and behind us was a very busy dog park. The weather was great (it’s San Diego, so that’s no news flash). In the afternoon Leslie joined in and we played doubles, then it was off to Penninsula Tennis Club where Gretchen Magers had organized a fundraiser for the Christchurch earthquake victims. Many of the players who were in Christchurch participated and Rick Leach and Jeff Tarango played two Aussies an exo set. It was laid back and fun to see everyone.
Tomorrow is a busy day…practice, the captains’ meetings where the draws will be made, then team photos (during the Super Bowl, whatever that is) and the opening ceremonies, all at Balboa Park.
Balboa is a huge park. The Balboa Tennis Club is very active, and the courts and facility are really nice. There’s a huge stadium court and it’s the Maureen Connolly Brinker Court, so a really great venue for our Cup, which is named after her.
I’ll try to post draws soon, but it may be Monday before I can do that. Check out http://www.itftennis.com/seniors for more information on this event.
