Dina McBride Wins Her First Gold Ball in La Jolla

Dina McBride playing in only her third national ever, one her first gold ball today at the 40 Hardcourts in La Jolla. She beat Ros Nidefer in the final 7562, rallying from 45 down in the first set to capture it. Prior to this week, she had not played a full singles match, since she ruptured her Achilles tendon last year in the final of this event. She is also in the mixed doubles semifinal today.

In the other mixed doubles Tracie Currie and Daniel Marting advanced to the final with a straight set win over Amy Alcini and Manolo Ortiz.

In the men’s semis Martin Barba advanced to the final where he will face the defending champion Oren Motevassel who beat Jeff Greenwald in three sets for the third straight year here. Greenwald is the defending 45 and over world singles champion. Motevassel is also in the 45 as is Barba.

Most play was canceled yesterday due to an all-day drizzle that turned to rain later in the day. Today the tournament is catching up with various scoring formats such as short sets and match tiebreakers in lieu of third sets depending on the event.

Play in the father-son the grandfather grandson men’s doubles and singles, continues tomorrow.
