Graydon Nichols won the 80 singles and doubles for the 2nd straight year at the grass courts, teaming with Tony Franco, his opponent in the final, to take the doubles (over Bob Meyerdierks/Bill Tully). It was his 8th straight Cat I 80 doubles title. He’s also won two world titles in the past two years, both with Franco. The singles final went the distance, with Nichols winning 61 in the third. It was Franco’s first event since having surgery in June.
John Powless, playing his first singles event in the 75s, won it going away, and teamed with Russell Seymour to win the doubles over Crewe/McCabe. One onlooker said he won the event without ever mussing his hair! Powless beat defending champion Chuck DeVoe 61 62 in the semis and Joe Russell in the final 76 75.

Bob Duesler also won singles and doubles, at the 70 grass, teaming with Jim Nelson to take the doubles title. Duesler beat Larry Sears in the final in a tough 3-setter after beating 3rd seeded Gordon Davis in the semis. Sears took out Herm Ahlers, the top seed, in the semis. Duesler/Nelson beat Landin/Lindborg in the doubles final.
The 30/35/40 men’s events were also held in conjunction with the 70 grass at the Philly Cricket Club. Guillaume Gauthier won the 30 singles over Chris Carey 62 76; Oren Motevassel beat Willie Dann in the final of the 35 singles 61 63 and Richard Schmidt beat unseeded Horatio Rearte 40 ret inj in the 40 singles final. Grover/Hernandez beat Bull/Carey in the 30 doubles final; Grover/Hernandez also reached the 35 doubles final against Dann/Miller (result not yet posted) and Litsky/Ward beat Sommerfeld/Stewart to win the 40 grass doubles.

Fred Drilling, new to the 65s, won the singles title; George Sarantos took the doubles crown with Stewart over Anderman/Brunkow. Drilling beat 4th seeded Rudy Hernando in the semis and Ted Hoehn, the 5th seed in the final. He won the 65 clay courts earlier this year. Sarantos also reached the singles semis.
