Tracy left after she lost to Erika so here’s a final report from Denver, home of the 40/50 Women’s Indoors.
Erika Smith did not relax after beating Tracy Houk in the semis of the 50 Indoors. Instead, she captured her first indoor singles gold ball in Denver, beating Phillis Zilm in straight sets for the title. This is a remarkable comeback by Smith, who only a year ago was fresh off of foot surgery and unable to walk or drive.
Shannon Cross/Stacy Swiggert won the doubles crown over Smith/Mary Dailey in straight sets.
In the 40s, Simona Bruetting took advantage of being the hometown girl and used the altitude and indoor courts. She beat Marlo Carruth, the top seed, in three sets, mounting a strong comeback after dropping the first set to win her first 40s national title. She then teamed with Jill Vanderkool to beat Dailey and Vicki Leroux in straight sets.
