The 50 & 60 doubles finals both went down to the wire yesterday, and featured terrific aggressive play and solid defense. Tracey Worley-Hagen and Wendy Mahaney gave the defending champions, Susan Wright and Kathy May Fritz all they could handle, taking the first set 6-4 and they had a point to go up 5-4 in the third and serve out the set. Fritz/Wright won the tiebreak 7-5 and gutted out the third 6-4. Tracey played very consistently and Mahaney returned brilliantly all tournament long. There was a SRO crowd roaring after good points, great atmosphere!
The 60s final, played on the intimate court 2, also had a good crowd. Dee Williams-Horne and Ann Stanley took on the top seeds, Molly Hahn/Sue Bramlette. Sue dipped the ball, Molly hit great backhand volleys, and Dee was imposing at net. In the end, Dee’s aggressive play and Ann’s solid play won the match in three hard fought sets.
Angie Ray and Joyce Jones won the 80 doubles over Louise Russ and Jane Lutz. Lutz won the singles over Nancy Stout 60 60.
Consolation matches and the 70s singles and doubles finals are going on today, after a late start due to rain. I am on my way to a family event up in Lodi.
