Lester Sack Stops Herm Ahlers’ Quest for Gold Slam in Last Match!

Lester Sack, fresh off a final round finish at the 75 World Championships, beat Herm Ahlers for the first time this year, 63 62 to win the singes at the hurricane-delayed 75/80 clay courts. Ahlers previously won the indoor, hard and grass titles.  Bob Duesler took the bronze. Ahlers and Sack were teammates at the 31st ITF World Team Championships in Turkey earlier in October where the USA won the 75 Bitsy Grant Cup.

Dick Doss/John Powless won their 75 doubles title of the year. Jim Nelson/Duesler won the prior three, but did not enter this event (Nelson had knee surgery recently).

In the 80s, George McCabe won his first singles title of the year and third doubles title (with Peter Crewe). He beat Richard Lawson in the final. Lawson upset Russell Seymour in the semis. Seymour retired down a set and leading 4/2 in the second. John Bradshaw/Richard Olsen won the silver in a round robin. McCabe and Seymour won the 80 doubles at the 31st ITF World Team Championships and McCabe successfully captained the men’s 80 team to victory there.
