Mariana Hollman & Rhona Kaczmarczyk have a very long match! 4 hours, 27 minutes

The long match of the day was Mariana Hollman, the 2nd seed, and Rhona Kaczmarczyk, the #4 seed. This was the first meeting of the two. Rhona won the match 62 46 62. It was a match of long grueling points. Kaczmarczyk’s slice was deadly, and her will was equal to Hollman’s today. Kaczmarczyk reached the 45 indoor final earlier this year, beating Fran Chandler en route. The two will meet again here, this time in the final. Chandler beat her warm up partner, Shelly Works, 63 63 in the other semi.

In the 35s, Molly Carter, who is playing doubles with Kaczmarczyk, had a tough 3 set loss to the steadily improving Amy Alcini, 76 46 61. Patricia Zerdan finally got to play a match, but didn’t drop a game. Her opponent tomorrow, Leslie Rose didn’t drop a point, receiving a default; Amy plays Mary Beth Williams.

In the 55s, Mary Ginnard and I played about 2.5 hours…and I was leading 64 42 when Mary fell for the 2nd time during the match and retired with an injured knee. She was able to play the doubles later in the day, so hopefully it’s not too serious. Tina Karwasky and Joanne Russell played what Sherri Bronson described as “the best senior tennis match I’ve ever watched”. She said she’d have bought a ticket to watch the match, which apparently was riveting. (I was playing the whole time). Tina rode an early break to a first set win and had a match point in the 2nd set on Joanne’s serve. She said Joanne put in a soft, short serve to her forehand and that she, Tina, went for it…but didn’t make it. Joanne went on to win the 2nd set 76 and the third 75. It was the senior version of “big babe tennis”, a lot of aggressive play.

In the 65s,Char Hillebrand ousted Suella Steel 62 76, Suella  commented that the match was very close, but Charleen played great on the big points. Cathie Anderson had a  win over Lurline Fujii, 62 63, and plays Hillebrand tomorrow.

Dorothy Matthiessen and Burnet Herrick  meet in the singles final in the 75s and are in the doubles final. Neither has been tested in singles, Matthiessen losing 3 games and Herrick dropping only 2.
