Spring Grandes Dames Saturday

Carol Clay beat Anne Guerrant today. She was talking to her doubles partner after the match, Ellen Goodman. Ellen didn’t see the match, she was playing the entire time. Carol was saying Anne only hit a couple of clean winners, and that she, Carol, was hitting the ball great, near the lines and made barely any errors…when Ellen looked at her and said, then how did she (Anne) win? She just assumed that Carol had lost. Carol ran Anne all over the court to set up a rematch of the BallenIsles final against Brenda Carter, who put out Andrea Martin in straight sets in the other semi.

Clay/Goodman face Carter/Judy Louie in the doubles final.

In the 40s, Kim Cashman put out her doubles partner, Karen Olsen in one semi and faces Lisa Haidermota in the final. Susie Brown/Betsy Savitt won the 40 doubles over Olsen/Cashman in 2 close sets.

In the 50s, Rita Giles beat Carolyn Franco and Carolyn Nichols beat Kerry Young, both by the same scores, 63 63. Nichols/Nancy Szen play Cindy Leprevost/Kerry Young in the doubles final. The latter were 62 64 winners over Lil Peltz-Petow/Savitt.

In the 70s, Nanda Fischer showed off her greatly improved forehand in beating Kay Merrill 60 62 and faces Ria Graham, a 3 set winner over Rachael Spease.

Jane Lutz won the 80 RR. The 70 doubles was a RR and was still ongoing when I left.

There were also a lot of consolation singles matches, and a lot of confusion over the various scoring formats used.
