The Connolly Cup advanced to the final today 3/0 over Australia. As expected, Susan Wright started off the day with a decisive win at #2 singles, winning 60 62. The anticipated feature match between World #1 Ros Balodis and defending world singles champion Diane Barker started just before 1pm. The first few games were a terrific display of senior tennis, with ever inch of the court explored by the two Cup veterans. However, midway through the set Ros was injured (apparently hearing something “pop” while hitting a serve). She gamely tried to continue but retired at 62 10 down to Diane. Italia Cup: USA fell 2/1 to Great Britain, winning the doubles point (Jared Jacobs/Mark Tepes) in three sets but dropping #2 (Ross Duncan) and #1 (Michael Halperin (Boca Raton)) singles points.
Suzanne Lenglen Cup: USA beat Brazil 3/0. Fanny Gamble won at #1 and Yulia Bolotova won at #2 and they won the doubles point. It was their cup debut!
Tony Trabert Cup: USA played Germany and had a tough day at the office. The #3 seeded Germans won handily over Rick Witsken at #2 and Guillaume Gauthier at #1. USA defaulted the doubles point.
Margaret Court Cup: W45: USA beat unseeded Brazil 3/0; Jenny Klitch (Palm Beach Gardens) won at #2 in 1 hour 40 minutes; she split sets with her opponent and was down 1/0 in the third when her opponent retired. Jolene Watanabe won easily at #1 singles and Shelly Works/Alissa Finerman won the doubles point.
Dubler Cup: M45: USA beat Argentina easily to advance to the semis. Oren Motevassel won at #2 singles, Mario Tabares (Miami) won at #1 singles and Jeff Tarango/Art Hernandez completed the sweep.
Fred Perry Cup: USA beat Gr. Britain 3/0 to advance to the semis. Andy Stoner won at #2, Mike Fedderly at #1 and Thomas Kong/Ken White at doubles.
Austria Cup: USA edged Germany 2/1 and it was CLOSE! Mike Tammen held off match points to win at #2 singles; Danny Waldman was blitzed at #1 and Wes Cash/Mark Vines dropped the first set of the deciding doubles before rebounding, like the world champions they are, to win the final sets 63 63 and advance to the semis.
So: Court, & Connolly cups into the final tomorrow; all other teams except Trabert, Italia and Lenglen Cups are in the semis.
