From Brenda Carter, Captain of the Althea Gibson Cup team:
Amazingly, we did it. We won the Althea Gibson Cup by defeating the team from Great Britain. Both singles matches were nail biters — however, both were won in straight sets. Judy started the day winning in two very tight sets, then Toni took the court and defeated her opponent in straight sets. Shortly thereafter, Liane and I defeated GB’s remaining two players. We are very excited.
The team competition ended today. USA won 5 of the 10 Cups and finished in the top 3 in the remaining 5 Cups. The individual World Championships begin tomorrow. Many of the Cup players will remain in Umag to compete for singles, doubles or mixed doubles titles and will be joined by many others who choose to compete from all over the world. However, many choose not to compete in the Individuals and head back to their home countries (including me) this weekend.
I’m so happy for my teammates as they all earned their places on the team with stellar national competition leading up to team selection. We all are very honored to be selected by USTA to represent USA. I’m attaching a photo of our team taken at the awards ceremony.
Thank you so much for supporting us.
Warmly and sincerely,
Brenda
