Draws for the Individual World 45 Championships.
Julie Thu (#1, captain, Austin), Hiromi Sasano (#2, San Diego), Francesca La O (San Francisco) and Julia Dimitrov (Alpharetta, GA) won the ITF Masters World Team Championships Friday in Tokyo, Japan. They beat Germany 3/0 to finish the competition unbeaten in singles and doubles.
Sasano played a marathon #2 singles match against Isabell Willer of Germany. Willer is a tall, slim lefty who hits heavy deep topspin and rarely misses. Sasano started the match trying to poke holes in Willer’s defenses and succeeding some and making some errors…I didn’t see the second set but by the third Sasano was attacking the net at every opportunity and Willer was lofting the balls with a bit less oomph. Sasano won 57 76 63 and apparently there was cramping to overcome during the lengthy match.
It was late so I didn’t see the second match but went to sleep confident that Julie Thu would finish the win for the USA, which she did, winning 75, 61 over Mirja Wagner and not dropping a set all week. She’s the top seed in the individual world championships which begins on Saturday.

After two days of indoor play, the finals were played outdoors in sunshiny, windy, shadowy conditions. Julia Dimitrov/Francesca La O completed the sweep for the USA winning the doubles 63 63 over Isabelle Benoit/Michaela Singer.
Great Britain finished third and Japan fourth.
The men’s 45 team finished 15th, finishing with a 3/0 win over South Africa. Spain beat Japan to win the Dubler Cup, Netherlands was third and Germany 4th.

Carolyn,
Thanks for sending out the link and these posts. I saw it about midnight and caught Julie’s first set of the finals. It was great.
