Venice to Cinque Terre via Train

We left Venice yesterday early to train to Cinque Terre via Verona. I put together this trip pretty quickly and booked the tickets during our flight from Turkey…and didn’t really notice there was only five minutes to change trains in Verona. Since our train was more than five minutes late and the train to Milano was on another platform…we had to take the train an hour later and thus the train from Milano two hours later…arriving eventually at 5pm. We stepped outside in Milano, to view the lovely facade of the train station and enjoy a bit of sun on a beautiful (low 60s, sunny, calm) day. The Trenitalia App is very helpful..I was able to easily change our tickets online to the later train without additional cost. I cannot emphasize enough to pack light. We have been saved mostly by the fact that we checked two bags at the Rome train station for this part of the trip. At most a carryon and a backpack….

We walked to our lodging, a pretty easy 10 minutes away and got the laundry going (our previous apartment had a non-functional machine), then walked back the way we’d come to go to a grocery store. There wasn’t tons there other than pasta and sauce and a few fruits and vegetables. It was chilly so I said I would make soup (minestrone) and it came out pretty well in the end!

Today we hope to do some hiking in this beautiful area.

  1. It’s a tough hike, not for the elderly or the faint of heart, but so worth the effort if one is able. Beautiful, quaint towns built onto the sides of the steep and rocky hills make the hike very memorable.
