US Players Win Four World Singles and Five World Doubles Titles
Donna Fales, Coral Gables, FLand Larry Turville, Naples, FL are now part of an exclusive group of players who have led their team to a Cup win, and then won the singles and doubles titles the following week in the ITF World Individual Championships.
Fales dominated the women’s 70 division this year, never losing more than two games a set. She beat the defending world champion, Jannine Lieffrig of South Africa 61 61 to win the singles and combined with her Althea Gibson Cup teammate, Dori deVries of Reno, Nevada to win the doubles title over Lieffrig/Audrey Van Coller, South Africa 62 63.
Turville avenged his loss to Jorge Camina of Spain in the final after taking out the defending champion, Hans Adama Van Scheltema of the Netherlands in the semis. He combined with his Von Cramm Cup teammate, Neal Newman, Colombus, Ohio to win the 60 doubles over Van Scheltema/Horst-Die Van De Loo, Germany, 76 36 62.
King Van Nostrand, Vero Beach, FL won his 12th ITF Seniors title in Antalya, beating Michael Van Berckel of the Netherlands in a close final, 75 76. Van Berkel gave King a rare beating in the Cup competition a week earlier, but Van Nostrand was ready for the rematch.
Burnett Herrick, Tarboro, NC, won her first world singles title, beating Muffie Grieve of Canada to win the 75s singles in Turkey 62 62. Burnett, a former model, was all smiles after her win. She didn’t drop a set all week in claiming the title.
Jimmy Parker, Santa Fe, NM and Ken Robinson, San Carlos, CA, in contrast were looking to defend their men’s 65 doubles title in Turkey and successfully did so, beating Zimbabwe’s Hank Irvine/Roger Dowdeswell in the final 62 61. This was a repeat of the US Men’s 65 grass court final, since Irvine and Dowdeswell live in the US despite playing under the Zimbabwe flag.
Chuck Nelson, Santa Monica, CA, played with a pickup partner, Alan Hocking of Australia, and the partnership was quite fruitous, as they won the men’s 75 doubles title without dropping a set, finishing with a straight set win over the top seeds, William Herremans/Michael Van Berckel/ of the Netherlands. In fact, the team only dropped six games (three matches). It was Nelson’s first world title.
Mary Boswell, Damascus, MD, combined with Grieve to win the 75 doubles in a closely contested match against Ruth Illingsworth/June Pearce of Great Britain. The won the three set battle 75 in the third set.
