Chamisal Thursday

First off, congratulations to Marge Kohler/Joyce Jones for winning the 75 doubles in a three set battle over Canby/Ray, the 2nd seeds. They played great all week.

In the 35s, the apparently ageless Shellys, Stillman-Scott and Works, both eligible for the 45s, are in the 35s final, Works beating Amy Alcini in 3 sets and SS beating Mai Ichikawa, also in 3 sets. Maybe though they saw Susan Wright play this week? After a tough opening round match with Kathy Vick, she’s barely…ok, hasn’t broken a sweat (she rarely does anyway), and beat up her doubles partner, Mariana Hollman 60 62…and she’s 51…something in the water. She faces Fran Chandler who rallied in the 2nd set to beat Tracey Thompson 61 75…Thompson volleyed great and seems to love the low bounces at Chamisal. But Fran was too steady in the end and passed and hit some great serves at clutch times.

As for Susan…she’s also in the doubles final, having beaten Kim Lackey/Kathy Chassion 61 64 while doubles specialists Debbie Croft/Pam Cooke rallied from 0-4 down in the third to beat Nichols/Smith 61 46 76.

Stillman-Scott and Anne Kerwin-Payne (also eligible for the 45s) reached the doubles semis with a tough 3 set win over Chassion/Tracy; Pam Dodman/Works upset the 3rd seeds, Ichikawa/Carolyn Wei, in 3 sets; Alcini/Mary Dailey beat Hartley/Hulsen and Cooke/Croft prevailed and play Alcini/Dailey tomorrow.

Martha Downing and Chieko Holt reached their appointed place in the final, Martha with a 61 63 win over Ruth Daub, who had a lot of great power shots, but not enough which landed in the singles court, and Holt rallied from a set down to put away Priscilla Sisson 62 in the third. Downing is also in the doubles final with Cindy Leprevost. The first time pairing beat Jan Kirkland-Cochran/Carla Brown 64 64. They face last year’s champs, Mary Harris/Leslie Vallejo who beat Daub/Barb Sasser in straight sets.

Cathie Anderson and Suella Steel, almost neighbors down in the San Diego area, reached the final, dispatching Sinclair Bill (63 60) and Nanda Fischer (61 63) respectively. They are also going to face each other in the doubles final. Anderson/Bill dispatched Fujii/Willauer 61 60 and Steel/Delay beat Giacomini/Pang 61 61…they’ll all be ready for the final tomorrow and rested.
