Chamisal, Wednesday

There were upsets today…which was less windy than previous days but still chilly. (My hands have been numb for all my singles matches at the start).

The 35s finally began play, and the two seeds (both of whom could have played 35s), prevailed, Shelly Works and Shelly Stillman-Scott.

Three of the top 4 seeds won in the 45s, but Tracey Thompson rallied from 14 down in the third set to upset Myke Loomis. She faces Fran Chandler while Susan Wright plays her doubles partner, Mariana Hollman in a repeat of last year’s final. Hollman had tough resistance from Judy Newman Rakela, winning 64 64, while Wright and Chandler cruised past Nichols and Smith respectively. In doubles though, Kim Lackey/Kathy Chamssion upended Loomis/Mary Dailey 63 63 and Nichols/Smith beat the defending champions, Chandler/Kathy Vick 60 63.

The top 4 seeds in the 55 singles advanced without problem…the top seed, Martha Downing, won without dropping a set (in singles or doubles). The top 4 seeds also advanced in doubles but the defending champs, Mary Harris/Leslie Vallejo had a tough 6475 win over Leslie Zauher and Anne Russ. They have another tough one tomorrow against Daub/Sasser.

In the 65s, Nanda Fischer continued her fine play, beating Lurline Fujii 61 62. She has a tough task in her next match, against Suella Steel, while doubles partners Cathie Anderson and Sinclair Bill play each other on the other side.

There were no upsets in the 75s in singles. That was not the case in doubles, as Marge Kohler a local player from Carmel, teamed with Joyce Jones to oust top seeds and defending champions Louise Russ/Mary Boswell 64 76…they rallied from 25 down in the 2nd set to win it with more aggressive play than their opponents.

There was a nice party tonight, great food courtesy of the sponsors Tanimura and Antle (www.taproduce.com)
