Fort Lauderdale, FL Thursday Feb. 9, 2023

The quarters in the 65s and 55s were played today and the semis of the 75s; the 45s is a round robin for singles and doubles.

I played Pat Purcell. We hadn’t played for 10 years in singles (we played just two weeks ago in doubles), though we play many of the same tournaments. It was very windy and the courts at the Lauderdale Tennis Club were quite dry and lacking a bit of clay even at 9am (to be fair, it’s the dry season and has been very windy). The wind was mostly a head wind and it was tough to win games hitting into the wind. Pat came into net constantly, and I managed to pass her better than the last time we played. We didn’t have long points but we did have interesting ones, punch/counterpunch. I won 62 63.

I play Susan Wright in the semis…she hasn’t lost a game in three matches in the tournament (2 singles and 1 doubles). It will be a challenge! Bunnie Jackson beat Donna Drosner efficiently and plays Diane Barker next. Diane beat Sally Smith 62 75. Sally played well but Diane, as is her want, picked up her game when it mattered most.

In doubles, we played Purcell and Kathy Foulk and played very well, to advance to the semis. Jackson/Smith, the second seeds, advanced to the semis too.

In the 75s, the top two seeds lost in quite different fashions. Gwenda Ward upset top seeded Toni Novack in a three hour battle 75 in the third while Betty Wachob took out her doubles partner Brenda Carter with the loss of few games. Wachob/Carter, the top seeds, advanced to the final and will face Sue Kimball/Jane (Bunny) Smith there.

The two seeds in 55 singles and doubles are in the semis tomorrow without much trouble.

In the 45s, Tabatha Butler beat Pollyanna Clark in the singles final; the round robin doubles concludes tomorrow.
