Saturday was finals day for the 55 & 65; the 45 & 75 finished yesterday. The weather was nearly hot, mid to upper 80s, not much cloud cover, humid, with a mild breeze. A pretty nice day for tennis if you like warm weather!
Charlotte Hartsock upheld her top seeding, beating #2 Simone Vasconcellos 63 75 to win the Cooper Cup Level 2/ITF 700. Vasconcellos is Brazilian but spends half the year in Florida, teaching tennis. Daniela Esswein finished third, beating Alice Stubbs in the playoff match.
Vasoncellos didn’t leave Fort Lauderdale without a title though. She teamed with Daniela Esswein (originally from Germany, but now a Palm Beach County resident) to edge Cheryl Hicks/Sheri Adler 67 46 1/0 (10) in an exciting match played before a big group of spectators. Sue Kaleel/Kristen Charlton finished third.
I won the 65 singles over Diane Barker (world #1, 65 singles) 62 64. We played on Court 1 and the court was much better than the one we played on yesterday! Also, it was more humid today which kept the court from drying out as much. Susan Wright beat Bunnie Jackson 0,3. However, the marathon player/love of the game award…actually a shared one today, goes to Pat Purcell and her doubles partner, Kathy Foulk. Both played two singles matches today, the second of which they played each other (it ended in a match tiebreak which Pat won, to finish 5th), then turned around and won the consolation doubles title over Kerry Young/Cindy LePrevost. I think Pat wore out her new shoes in one day. Oh…forgot to write that Susan and I won the doubles over Bunnie Jackson and Sally Smith 61 64, great second set, and Debbie Burgess/Donna Drosner finished third.

Great wins today!
