Our team, the Women’s 65, Kitty Godfree Cup, won 2/1 over a tough French team…especially tough in singles.I lost at #2 in around three hours to Benedict LeGrand who played extremely well. She made me play badly but I fought hard. Susan Wright played a terrific match at #1 singles, beating the always tough Betty Michel 75 64 to level the tie. I was pretty confident about the doubles, even though both LeGrand and Michel played the doubles; Anne Frautschi combined Wright to give a doubles clinic. The women’s 65 German team watched the entire match (they had just finished their tie on an adjacent court) and were amazed at the great points. Carolyn Lane was a great supporter all day, warming up players, sweeping courts and together we were a cohesive team. We play Great Britain, 3/0 winners over Germany in the semis.

The USA women’s 70s team won comfortably against the French 70s team, 3/0, who for some reason didn’t play their #1 singles player against them. Una Davis at #1, Tina Karwasky at #2 and Betsy Kuhle/Jan Cochran won the singles and doubles points. The play Australia in the final, who upset Great Britain in the semis.

The USA women’s team lost a heartbreaker against Great Britain. Brenda Carter won at #2 singles; Judy Dixon lost to Marjorie Love 76 in the third, then played the deciding doubles with Liane Bryson…and they lost 14-12 in the match tiebreak. Or should I say match heartbreak.

The men’s 80s (Jimmy Parker’s team) beat Zimbabwe 3/0; Jody Rush at #2 and Parker at #1 won the singles while Fred Drilling/Dean Corley took the doubles point.

Th men’s 85s edged Germany (in a deciding doubles match tiebreak). Don Matthias won both #2 singles and the doubles (with Jerald Hayes). They play for the Cup tomorrow.

The men’s 70s won in the 9th place playoff group; men’s 75 lost both singles (Al Yearwood at #2 and Michael Beautyman at #1) and play Spain next in the 3/4 playoff…Italy upset Spain today.

The women’s 80s won their 5-7 place match; the men’s 65s also won (they are playing for 9th, having lost out in the draw for one of the three lucky loser spots…and there were only four teams in the pool for the three slots…bad luck).

The men’s 70s beat Portugal 3/0 today and play Spain tomorrow in the 9-12th playoff.

Tonight was also the gala dinner by the outdoors between the pool and the stage. The latter had a band playing and we were far enough away so it wasn’t ear shattering! It was pretty nice, lots of heat lamps and lots of food of course! Both the salad and dessert setups were beautiful and for hot dishes there was good variety, from grilled salmon to lamb chops to steak.
